Portraits

When painting people my aim is to capture the feeling of the peson: their mood or attitude and what it is like being in their presence.

This painting was done in a single sitting and I had the intention to work on it further, but the colours and the 'song' of the painting seemed to be complete. I could not risk further work which might have destroyed the feeling of the colours and half focus.

As you can see, I am highly influenced by art from China and Japan and in particular by Chinese brushmarks. What interests me is the unity with nature as the energy flows from subject, through the paint and brush onto the paper and out to the viewer. The  philosophy sets out the aim of showing as much in as few brushmarks as possible.
